MA Latin/ Music
About this course
The combination of Latin and music at university is more natural than it might first appear. Both disciplines reward sustained attention, patience with complexity, and the ability to work within demanding formal structures. Latin opens access to a literary culture of extraordinary richness, from the poets Virgil and Ovid to the historians, dramatists, and orators of ancient Rome, while music at degree level encompasses both practical engagement with sound and a rigorous intellectual tradition of analysis, theory, and historical understanding. Together they offer a genuinely distinctive humanities formation. At the University of Glasgow this part-time programme allows you to study both subjects across an extended period, engaging with Latin literature and Roman civilisation while also developing your musical knowledge and skills. In Latin you will read poets, dramatists, and prose writers in the original, and explore Roman political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art. In music you will develop your analytical and critical faculties, engaging with different musical periods, forms, and traditions. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different university environment and to encounter other approaches to classical and musical learning. Glasgow's strong research culture in both classics and music enriches the academic context in which you work. Graduates with this combination of Latin and music develop skills that are genuinely rare and highly transferable: precision in reading and analysis, historical consciousness, cultural breadth, and the ability to sustain engagement with difficult material. Careers in education, arts administration, museums, heritage, cultural journalism, and broadcasting are all accessible. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in classical studies, musicology, or music performance. For those drawn to the humanities at their most demanding and most rewarding, this programme offers an exceptional intellectual experience.
