About this course

Latin American studies is an interdisciplinary field that brings together history, politics, literature, culture, economics and social science to understand the societies and transformations of a region of extraordinary complexity and significance. Latin America is home to some of the world's most dynamic and contested political experiments, from the revolutionary movements and authoritarian regimes of the twentieth century to the contemporary challenges of inequality, environmental change and democratic governance. Its literary culture is world-class, and its influence on global music, art and popular culture is profound. The University of Essex offers this four-year full-time programme, drawing on the university's strong reputation in social and political science. You will develop knowledge of Latin American history, politics and social structures alongside engagement with the region's cultural and literary production, examining how the societies of Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and their neighbours have developed, how they have been shaped by colonialism and its aftermath, and what their contemporary dynamics reveal about broader questions of development, democracy and inequality. The interdisciplinary approach means you will draw on multiple analytical frameworks, developing the flexibility to bring historical, sociological, political and cultural perspectives to bear on the same questions. The degree develops research skills, the capacity for critical analysis across disciplines, an understanding of how global and regional processes interact in specific national contexts, and the cultural knowledge needed to engage with Latin America seriously. Graduates pursue careers in international development organisations, NGOs, the diplomatic service, journalism, research, the cultural sector, international business and education. Spanish and Portuguese proficiency, often developed alongside the area studies content, adds significantly to graduate employability. Postgraduate study in Latin American studies, development studies, politics or related social sciences is a natural progression for those wishing to specialise further.
