About this course

Journalism is the practice of gathering, verifying, contextualising and communicating information to public audiences, serving one of the most fundamental democratic functions: ensuring that citizens have access to accurate, independent and accountable reporting on matters that affect their lives. In an era of misinformation, polarisation and the economic disruption of traditional media, the skills of rigorous journalism have never been more important, and journalists who can work across print, broadcast and digital platforms with equal competence are especially valuable. At City St George's, University of London, one of the UK's leading journalism schools with long-standing connections to the media industry, this three-year, full-time BA develops professional training and proficiency across print, broadcast and online journalism. You will develop skills in reporting, research, interviewing, writing for different audiences, audio production, video journalism, data journalism and digital storytelling, alongside the editorial judgement and ethical awareness that distinguish professional journalists from content producers. The programme includes elective options in humanities subjects such as politics and the history of journalism, allowing you to develop specialist knowledge in areas that interest you. The course also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placements, giving you direct professional experience in newsrooms, broadcasters or digital media organisations and an international perspective on journalism practice. Graduates pursue careers as reporters, correspondents, producers, editors, data journalists, digital content creators, documentary makers, and communications professionals across newspapers, magazines, broadcasting organisations, online news platforms, podcasts, wire services and the growing field of independent and specialist journalism. City's location at the heart of London's media industry means strong professional networks and opportunities throughout the degree. Postgraduate study in journalism or a specialist field is another route taken by some graduates.
