MA Italian and Management
About this course
Italian and management is a combination that equips you for professional life in international organisations, offering the cultural depth and linguistic fluency of advanced Italian study alongside the analytical and practical tools of management. Italian is the language of Dante, Gramsci, and Calvino, and also the language of some of Europe's most creative and successful industries, from fashion and automotive to design, food, and finance. Combined with management, it produces graduates who can navigate complex organisations and communicate effectively in one of Europe's most important cultural and economic contexts. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of St Andrews leads to a Master of Arts with Honours and includes a year abroad, which is typically spent in Italy and is central to developing the level of language proficiency and cultural understanding the degree is designed to produce. You will develop your Italian to a high level, engaging with literature, film, culture, and contemporary Italian society, alongside study of management theory, organisational behaviour, strategy, and the analytical frameworks that underpin business decision-making. The combination allows you to approach management questions with cross-cultural sensitivity and to engage with Italian professional contexts with linguistic confidence. Graduates of Italian and management programmes move into careers in international business, management consultancy, the fashion, design, and creative industries, diplomacy and the foreign service, arts and cultural organisations with European connections, and multinational companies with significant Italian operations. The combination of management knowledge and genuine Italian language fluency is rare and genuinely valued in organisations that operate across Europe. Further postgraduate study in management, Italian studies, or international business is a natural extension for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic careers.
