About this course

International relations is the study of how the world works beyond the borders of individual states: how countries, international organisations, and other actors interact, compete, and cooperate; what forces shape the international order; and why conflicts arise, persist, and sometimes end. It draws on political science, history, economics, and philosophy to develop rigorous analytical tools for understanding the complex dynamics of global affairs, from the structure of power in the international system to the specific mechanisms of trade, diplomacy, and security. At Manchester Metropolitan University, this full-time, three-year BA gives you the opportunity to explore how countries, international organisations, and non-state actors interact on the global stage, using theories and models to explain and interpret global power. You will examine questions ranging from the behaviour of individual actors to the dynamics of entire global systems, developing the capacity to challenge established understandings of why the world is the way it is and how it might be changed. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience alongside your academic study that is directly relevant to careers in international organisations, NGOs, and the public sector. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. International relations graduates are well placed for careers in the civil service and foreign office, international organisations including the UN and EU, NGOs, journalism, think tanks, development agencies, conflict resolution bodies, and the military. The combination of analytical rigour and global awareness is also valued in multinational corporations, consultancy firms, and in the growing range of businesses that operate internationally. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in international relations, security studies, development, or law, while others move directly into graduate schemes in public service or the private sector.
