About this course

International law governs the relationships between states and other actors in the global arena, providing the frameworks within which diplomacy, trade, armed conflict, human rights, and the environment are regulated. It encompasses treaties, customary international law, the decisions of international courts and tribunals, and the growing body of rules created by international organisations. As the world becomes more interdependent, the importance of international legal frameworks has never been more apparent, whether in trade disputes, human rights cases, climate negotiations, or responses to conflict. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time LLB in International Law gives you a grounding in both domestic law and its international dimensions. You will study the foundations of the English legal system alongside public international law, international relations, and the legal regimes governing specific areas such as armed conflict, human rights, and trade. Optional modules allow you to explore areas such as the laws of armed conflict or the legal systems of specific jurisdictions, tailoring the degree to your interests. The programme includes a placement year in industry, a year abroad, and a work placement component, providing significant professional and international experience before you graduate. These opportunities to engage with law in international and professional settings are among the most distinctive features of the degree. Graduates are well prepared for a wide range of careers. Many proceed to professional legal training as solicitors or barristers, particularly in firms and chambers with international practices. Others go on to work in the foreign service, international organisations, NGOs, government, human rights bodies, international trade, and policy roles. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in international law, human rights law, or international relations.
