LLB International Law
About this course
International law is the body of rules, principles and norms that governs the conduct of states and international organisations in their relations with each other and, increasingly, with individuals and non-state actors. It covers areas as diverse as the laws of armed conflict, human rights, trade law, maritime law, environmental agreements, investment protection, and the jurisdiction of international courts and tribunals. As the world becomes more interconnected and the need for multilateral solutions to shared problems grows, international law has become more central to global affairs than at any point in its history. At Coventry University, this three-year full-time programme examines both domestic and international legal frameworks, giving you a grounding in the foundations of English law alongside a focused and sophisticated engagement with the structures, institutions and substantive rules of international law. You will study public international law, international human rights, international trade law, the law of international organisations, and the mechanisms by which international legal norms are made, applied and enforced. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. Graduates of International Law programmes pursue careers in international organisations, the diplomatic service, NGOs, international arbitration, human rights organisations, the civil service, law firms with international practices, and policy institutions. Many pursue postgraduate study in international law, human rights, international relations, or related fields, and some go on to bar or solicitor training routes where their international expertise adds value. The breadth of demand for international legal expertise means that this is a degree with strong and diverse career possibilities.
