BSc International Disaster Management & Humanitarian Response
About this course
International disaster management and humanitarian response is a discipline that takes seriously the realities of natural disasters, complex emergencies, conflict, and the large-scale displacement of populations, and asks how institutions, governments, and aid organisations can respond more effectively to protect lives and support recovery. It draws on public health, logistics, international law, political science, development studies, and organisational management to understand both the nature of disasters and the systems that attempt to address them. At the University of Manchester, this three-year full-time programme engages with the frameworks, ethics, and practical realities of humanitarian work. You will study disaster risk reduction, emergency response logistics, humanitarian law and policy, refugee protection, public health in emergencies, and the coordination challenges that arise when multiple actors operate in crisis settings. Manchester's strong research base in development and humanitarian studies means you will engage with current debates in the field, including questions about the effectiveness of aid, the politics of humanitarianism, and the growing role of technology and data in emergency response. Graduates pursue careers in international NGOs, UN agencies, governments, the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, think tanks, and research institutions. Roles in field coordination, logistics, programme management, policy analysis, emergency communication, and advocacy are common directions. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in international development, humanitarian action, public health, or international law, which is increasingly expected for senior roles in the sector. The field is demanding and competitive, and Manchester's reputation in this area is a meaningful asset for graduates entering it.
