BA Interior Design
About this course
Interior design is the art and practice of shaping the spaces in which people live, work, and spend their time. It goes far beyond decoration, engaging with questions of human experience, wellbeing, function, and the way that space can be configured to support the activities and needs of its occupants. Interior designers work with light, material, colour, structure, and narrative, creating environments that are not only visually compelling but also functional, safe, and appropriate to their context. At the University of Plymouth, this three-year, full-time degree develops both the creative and the professional dimensions of the practice. You will develop skills in design research, spatial analysis, drawing, model-making, digital visualisation, and materials specification, learning to move from initial concept through to detailed design resolution. The programme encourages you to develop a distinctive creative sensibility alongside the technical and communicative skills that professional practice requires, including the ability to present ideas clearly to clients and collaborators. A sandwich placement year provides extended professional experience in the interior design industry, and work placement opportunities are embedded throughout the degree, giving you a strong foundation in real-world design practice before graduation. A year abroad also features in the programme, broadening your spatial and cultural horizons in a discipline where international influence and exposure matter. Graduates of interior design work in residential and commercial design practices, retail and hospitality design, exhibition and museum design, set design, and the property sector. The skills of spatial thinking, visual communication, and design management are valued in related fields including architecture, product design, and creative direction. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in interior design, architecture, or related design disciplines. For those who are passionate about the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit, this programme provides a thorough and creatively ambitious education.
