BA Interior Architecture and Design
About this course
Interior architecture and design is concerned with the transformation of interior spaces, creating environments that are not only visually compelling but functionally effective and appropriate for the people who use them. Unlike interior decoration, which focuses on surface aesthetics, interior architecture and design engages with the spatial and structural dimensions of a building, considering how volume, light, material, and circulation work together to produce spaces that serve their occupants well. Sustainability is an increasingly central consideration, as designers are asked to create spaces that are both beautiful and environmentally responsible. At Sheffield Hallam University, this part-time programme includes a foundation year and a sandwich placement year, making it both accessible and professionally grounded. You will work within an inclusive and collaborative studio community, learning alongside industry specialists in a setting that reflects the collaborative nature of professional interior architecture practice. The programme develops your design skills from initial concept through to resolved proposal, covering spatial analysis, materials, technical drawing, and the ability to design sustainable spaces for diverse audiences. The placement year gives you direct professional experience in an interior architecture or design practice, which is essential in a field where a strong portfolio and demonstrated professional exposure are central to employability. Graduates work in interior architecture and design studios, architectural practices, property development companies, retail and hospitality design, and heritage and conservation projects. The sustainability focus of the Sheffield Hallam programme is particularly relevant given the growing importance of sustainable design across the built environment sector. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in interior architecture, architecture, or sustainable design to develop their expertise and enhance their professional standing.
