BA Illustration
About this course
Illustration is a discipline that uses visual images to tell stories, convey ideas, and create meaning across a very wide range of contexts. Whether through children's books and editorial work, visual journalism, animated sequences, or the emerging possibilities of digital and screen-based storytelling, illustration is one of the most versatile and expressive forms of visual communication. The discipline demands both a distinctive visual voice and the technical skill to realise ideas in ways that are impactful, innovative, and fit for purpose. At Birmingham City University, this three-year programme develops your ability to convey authentic and innovative ideas and messages that are impactful, thought-provoking, and publishable. You will work across a range of illustration styles and approaches, developing your own visual language while also learning the technical skills that professional practice demands, including the ability to embrace technological advances and work in digital as well as traditional media. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities, connecting your academic development directly to the professional illustration world. Graduates from illustration programmes work across publishing, advertising, editorial media, animation, games, design agencies, and education. Many graduates build freelance practices, working across several specialisms and client types, while others move into staff roles within design studios, publishing houses, or media organisations. The narrative and image-making skills the degree develops are also applicable to motion graphics, UI/UX design, textile design, and a wide range of other fields within the creative industries. Further study at postgraduate level is an option for those wishing to develop a specialist research practice or move into teaching.
