About this course
Human physiology is the study of how the human body works: how cells, tissues, organs, and systems integrate to maintain the conditions that support life, how they respond to physical and physiological challenge, and how their dysfunction produces disease. It is a discipline that sits at the heart of medicine and healthcare, providing the mechanistic understanding of the body that underpins clinical diagnosis, treatment, and the development of new therapies. Physiologists draw on biochemistry, cell biology, physics, and pharmacology to build a comprehensive and dynamic picture of how the living body functions. At Manchester Metropolitan, this part-time programme allows you to develop expertise in human physiology alongside other commitments, whether professional work in healthcare, sport, or a related field, or personal responsibilities that make full-time study difficult. You will study the physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, and other systems, developing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory and research skills. A sandwich year and a work placement are built in, providing direct experience of applying physiological knowledge in professional or research settings. The programme's connections with academic and research staff allow students to engage with current research using cutting-edge technology. Graduates in human physiology go on to work in clinical research, NHS research and development roles, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, sport science, exercise physiology, and laboratory management. The degree is also a strong foundation for further professional training in healthcare, including medicine, physiotherapy, and clinical physiology. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in physiology, sports science, clinical science, or related biomedical fields.
