About this course
Human nutrition is the scientific study of how the food we consume affects the functioning of the human body, the development of chronic disease, and the health of populations. It draws on biochemistry, physiology, epidemiology, and the social sciences to ask what we need to eat for health, how dietary patterns relate to conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, and how nutrition policy can improve population health outcomes. This four-year full-time degree at the University of Westminster includes a foundation year entry route, a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and embedded work placement experience, making it one of the more comprehensively structured nutrition programmes available. You will develop a thorough scientific grounding in the biochemistry of nutrients, metabolism, dietary assessment and research methods, and the relationship between diet and health across the life course. The foundation year provides accessible entry for students who need to build their scientific knowledge and academic skills before entering degree-level study, and the programme's subsequent years develop increasingly advanced knowledge of nutrition science and its applications. The sandwich year and work placement experience give you professional experience in nutrition-related roles, and the year abroad extends your formation into an international context. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points reflects an accessible admissions standard. Graduates from human nutrition programmes move into careers in dietetics and clinical nutrition, public health nutrition, food industry product development and regulation, health promotion, research, and community health roles. Those who wish to practise as registered dietitians will need to complete a postgraduate dietetics degree, for which a nutrition BSc is excellent preparation. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in nutritional science, public health, or food policy.
