About this course

Horticulture is the science and art of growing plants for food, medicine, and aesthetic and environmental purposes. It encompasses the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and ornamental plants, alongside the design, management, and ecology of gardens, urban green spaces, and commercial growing operations. As concerns about food security, biodiversity, and the role of green infrastructure in mitigating climate change have grown, the practical and scientific knowledge of horticulture has become more important, not less. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this two-year full-time programme develops both the practical skills and the scientific understanding needed to work in horticulture professionally. The Highland and Islands setting is distinctive: the region's climate, soils, and landscape create growing conditions that are different from those of lowland Britain, and working with plants in this environment develops the adaptability and observational skills that professional horticulturists need. You will study plant science, soil science, cultivation techniques, garden design, and the management of horticultural enterprises, developing the combination of scientific literacy and hands-on competence that employers in the sector value. The programme is suited to those who wish to move into professional horticulture quickly rather than pursuing a longer degree route, and the two-year format provides a focused and practically oriented qualification.
