MA History/Music
About this course
History and music is a combination that places two of the richest traditions of human cultural life in dialogue. History is the study of change and continuity in human society through time, asking how we know what happened, why things changed, and how the past continues to shape the world we inhabit. Music engages you with one of humanity's most fundamental forms of expression, through performance, composition, analysis, and the critical and historical study of how music has been created, experienced, and debated across time and culture. The four-year full-time History and Music programme at the University of Glasgow offers wide-ranging study in both disciplines. The History programme covers medieval to modern times and spans the globe, drawing on research expertise in Scottish, British, European, American, and global history, as well as in slavery studies, gender history, and war, intelligence, and genocide studies. The Music programme gives you options across performance, composition, musicology, and other musical disciplines, allowing you to design a pathway that reflects your particular interests and strengths. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study both subjects in a different institutional and cultural context, broadening your perspective on each. With a typical entry tariff of 200 points, the programme is demanding and rewards students who bring genuine intellectual commitment to both disciplines. The combination of historical analytical skills with musical knowledge and critical listening is distinctive and versatile. Graduates pursue careers in arts administration, broadcasting, heritage, journalism, education, museum and archive work, and academic research, as well as going on to postgraduate study in either history or music or in interdisciplinary cultural studies.
