About this course

History of art and Italian is a combination that brings together two disciplines with deep and intertwined histories. History of art examines how and why paintings, sculptures, buildings, and works of design in all media come to look the way they do, exploring the conditions of production, the intentions of makers, the responses of viewers, and the social and cultural contexts in which art has been made. Italian opens direct access to one of the world's great artistic traditions, from the medieval precursors of the Renaissance through Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael to the twentieth-century avant-garde and contemporary Italian art, and to the literary and cultural heritage that shapes Italian visual culture. At Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme combines rigorous art historical training with Italian language and cultural study, developing both critical analytical competency and the linguistic skills to engage with Italian art and culture in their original contexts. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in arts, cultural, or education settings. A year in Italy is a natural accompaniment to the Italian strand and the year abroad provides exactly this opportunity. The typical entry tariff is 168 points. Graduates of history of art and Italian programmes pursue careers in museums and galleries, arts administration, auction houses, the heritage sector, arts journalism and criticism, publishing, cultural diplomacy, and education. The Italian language component opens additional pathways in Italy's extraordinarily rich institutional and commercial arts sector, in Italianate fashion and design businesses, and in European cultural institutions. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in art history, museum studies, Italian studies, or curatorial practice.
