About this course

History and theology together open up two of the most fundamental dimensions of human experience: how societies change and develop over time, and how human beings have understood, expressed, and organised their relationship with the sacred. History asks what happened, why, and what it means, examining the political, social, economic, and cultural forces that have shaped human life across the ages. Theology and religious studies examines the origin, function, and meaning of religion, studying and comparing the major world religions and engaging with questions about belief, text, ethics, and the relationship between faith and culture. At Aberdeen this four-year full-time degree combines wide-ranging historical study across the medieval, early modern, and modern periods in Scotland, Europe, America, Asia, and Africa with a deep engagement with religious traditions. The theology component pays particular attention to Christian faith in historic and contemporary contexts while also examining other major religious traditions comparatively. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic and cultural environment. You will graduate with strong linguistic and analytical skills alongside detailed knowledge of both historical processes and religious traditions, a combination valued in a wide range of professional and academic contexts. Graduates go on to careers in ministry, education, heritage, journalism, the civil service, international development, and many other fields where historical knowledge and religious literacy are valued. The combination of disciplines is particularly useful for roles that require understanding of how religion and society interact, from interfaith dialogue and policy to journalism and education. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in theology, history, religious studies, or related disciplines.
