BA History and Spanish
About this course
History and Spanish is a combination that connects the study of the past with one of the world's most significant languages, creating a degree that is as intellectually rich as it is practically valuable. History develops your ability to investigate complex events and periods, to evaluate evidence critically, and to construct sustained arguments about human experience across time. Spanish gives you access to the culture, literature, and society of Spain and Latin America, and provides a linguistic tool that opens professional opportunities across Europe and the wider world. At the University of Stirling, this four-year, full-time programme develops your Spanish to a high level of proficiency while also giving you a thorough grounding in historical study. You will engage with the history of Britain, Europe, and the wider world alongside the literature, culture, and contemporary life of the Spanish-speaking world, developing both your language skills and your ability to analyse historical change across periods and places. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to live and study in a Spanish-speaking country, deepening your linguistic fluency and your direct experience of the cultures you are studying. The combination of historical training and Spanish language competence is valued in a range of careers. Teaching, journalism, translation, the civil service, international organisations, heritage, cultural management, and international business are all accessible paths. The analytical and communication skills that history develops are genuinely transferable, and the addition of Spanish language competence adds a dimension that relatively few graduates can offer. Many continue to postgraduate study in history, Hispanic studies, international relations, or education, and some pursue research careers in areas where both disciplines are relevant.
