BA History and Politics
About this course
History and Politics is a combination that addresses two of the most fundamental dimensions of human collective life: the processes and structures through which communities organise and exercise power, and the historical forces that have shaped those structures over time. Politics examines political institutions, ideologies, and behaviour, asking how governments are formed and held to account, how citizens and interests influence policy, and how power is distributed within and between states. History provides the contextual depth that makes political understanding genuinely meaningful, showing how contemporary states, political ideas, and international relationships have developed out of earlier conditions and conflicts. At York St John University, this part-time programme with a foundation year brings these two disciplines into close dialogue, emphasising the relevance of history to modern life as you combine historical investigation with discussion of debates and issues in current politics. The foundation year provides a supported entry route for students who would benefit from additional academic preparation before engaging with the full degree. The programme includes a sandwich year, work placements, and the option of a year abroad, giving you professional and international experience alongside your academic study. History and Politics graduates develop skills in research, argument, critical analysis, and the communication of complex ideas that are valued across a very wide range of careers. The civil service, journalism, law, think tanks, local and national government, international organisations, the charity sector, and business are all destinations where this combination of skills is appreciated. Postgraduate study in politics, history, international relations, or law is a natural next step for those who wish to deepen their expertise or pursue a particular professional direction.
