BA History and Politics
About this course
History and politics is a pairing that reflects how inseparable the two disciplines really are. History provides the temporal depth needed to understand how political institutions, ideologies, conflicts, and power structures have developed over time, while politics offers the analytical frameworks to interpret those historical processes and to understand the present political world. Studying them together allows you to ask both what happened and what it means, moving between the specificity of historical events and the more abstract questions of political theory and comparative analysis. At the University of Winchester, this three-year full-time programme examines compelling global issues across a wide geographic and thematic range. You will explore the world economy, religions and their political dimensions, environmentalism as both a political and historical phenomenon, and international relations, with coverage spanning Britain, Western Europe, the United States, Eastern Europe, and East Asia. This breadth is one of the programme's strengths, developing genuinely international and comparative perspectives rather than focusing narrowly on a single national tradition. You will build skills in historical research and argumentation alongside the analytical tools of political science. History and politics graduates are well prepared for careers across the civil service, policy analysis, journalism, law, teaching, politics itself, the voluntary sector, and a wide range of organisations where the ability to understand complex social and political questions is valued. The combination of empirical historical knowledge and theoretical political understanding is particularly useful in roles that require contextual judgement, the interpretation of events, or engagement with diverse stakeholders across national and cultural boundaries. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in political science, international relations, history, or public policy.
