BA Heritage, Archaeology And History
About this course
Heritage, archaeology and history is an interdisciplinary combination that addresses the full range of ways in which societies understand, investigate, preserve and make use of the past. History examines the human past through written and documentary evidence, developing the analytical and research skills needed to interpret texts, construct arguments and understand how past events and processes shaped the world we inhabit today. Archaeology recovers and interprets the material traces of past societies, providing access to periods and populations that left little or no written record. Heritage addresses how the past is selected, managed, interpreted and communicated to contemporary audiences, raising important questions about whose history is told, who benefits and what ethical responsibilities attach to the stewardship of the past. At Bangor University this programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you the broadest possible range of formative experiences across the full programme. Bangor's location in north Wales, a region with a dense and distinctive cultural and archaeological heritage, provides a particularly rich context for the applied dimensions of the programme, including fieldwork and engagement with real heritage sites and institutions. You will develop competence in historical research, archaeological fieldwork, heritage management and the communication of the past to diverse audiences. You will develop skills in source analysis, archaeological method, heritage interpretation, research design, critical writing and the professional practice of history and heritage in public contexts. Graduates pursue careers in archives, museums, heritage management, historic environment organisations, cultural tourism, community history, education, publishing and the civil service. Postgraduate study in archaeology, history, museum studies, heritage management or conservation is a well-established route for those seeking specialist expertise.
