MA Hebrew and Mathematics
About this course
Hebrew and mathematics is an unusual but intellectually compelling combination, bringing together one of the world's oldest and most culturally significant languages with one of the most powerful and universal analytical disciplines. Hebrew is both the sacred language of the Jewish scriptures and the modern official language of Israel, a remarkable revival story that makes it unique in linguistic history. As a vehicle for biblical, talmudic, medieval, and modern literature, it opens access to thousands of years of Jewish thought and culture. Mathematics develops rigorous analytical and problem-solving skills, and its applications span science, technology, finance, and data in ways that give its graduates consistent and broad employability. At St Andrews this four-year full-time programme takes advantage of the breadth of the Scottish MA to allow serious development in both subjects. You will study Hebrew language and its literary, religious, and cultural traditions alongside the core areas of mathematics, including analysis, algebra, and applied topics, developing genuine depth in both fields. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in a different country and to engage with Hebrew language and mathematical study in a new intellectual environment. This combination opens graduate paths that are genuinely distinctive. The mathematics component gives you access to careers in finance, data science, technology, actuarial work, and any sector that values quantitative rigour. Hebrew expertise is valued in academic research in Jewish studies, biblical studies, and linguistics, in cultural and heritage organisations, in diplomatic and intelligence contexts where knowledge of Israel and the broader Middle East is relevant, and in translation and publishing. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in mathematics, Hebrew, or Jewish studies, building specialist expertise in fields where the combination is rare and genuinely distinctive.
