BSc Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology)
About this course
Healthcare science in cardiac physiology is the discipline concerned with investigating, monitoring, and assessing the function of the heart and cardiovascular system. Cardiac physiologists are healthcare scientists who perform diagnostic investigations including electrocardiography, echocardiography, cardiac catheterisation support, and ambulatory monitoring, providing the clinical data that cardiologists and other physicians depend on to make treatment decisions. The profession is regulated and plays an essential role in managing the large and growing burden of cardiovascular disease in the UK population. At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time programme is designed specifically to meet the requirements of the NHS's Modernising Scientific Careers programme, developing the skills that are in short supply and high demand within the healthcare science workforce. You will study the physiology and pathology of the cardiovascular system, the principles and techniques of cardiac investigation, pharmacology relevant to cardiac practice, patient communication, and the clinical governance frameworks within which healthcare scientists operate. The programme has a strong practical focus, with clinical experience embedded throughout to build the hands-on competence that professional practice demands. Graduates from this programme are eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as healthcare scientists and enter a profession with strong NHS demand driven by the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and the growing role of diagnostic science in healthcare. Career development includes specialisation in areas such as echocardiography, electrophysiology, or cardiac rhythm management, and senior practitioners may move into education, research, or clinical leadership roles. Postgraduate study in cardiovascular science and clinical healthcare science is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
