About this course

Ancient Greek and history of art is a pairing with a particularly deep internal logic: ancient Greece is not only a major field of classical study but also the foundational moment in Western art history, from Archaic sculpture and red-figure pottery to the architecture of the Acropolis and the philosophical tradition that has shaped how art is thought about ever since. Studying Greek gives you direct access to the literary, philosophical, and historical texts of one of the most influential civilisations in world history. History of art equips you to analyse visual and material culture with rigour and to understand how images and objects produce meaning across time and culture. The two subjects speak to each other at every turn. At the University of Glasgow this four-year full-time programme takes you through the study of Greek language and literature, including Homer, Athenian tragedy and comedy, the orators and historians, and philosophers including Plato, alongside the political, social, and religious history of the Greek world. In history of art, you will develop skills in visual analysis and art historical method, tracing the production and reception of art from ancient times to the present day. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the chance to study in a different country and to encounter both classical and art historical traditions from a new vantage point. Graduates from this combination go on to careers in galleries, museums, heritage organisations, publishing, journalism, teaching, and academic research. Classical languages are a significant advantage in academic archaeology and classical studies, and the history of art component opens paths in the commercial and public art world. The analytical rigour and cultural breadth of this combination are also valued across the civil service, law, and any field that prizes precise reading, clear argument, and deep cultural knowledge.
