BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the discipline of visual communication, the art and craft of presenting information, ideas, and identities through carefully considered visual form. Typography, layout, image-making, colour, branding, digital interfaces, and motion graphics all fall within its scope, and the most skilled graphic designers are those who can combine visual judgement with conceptual thinking and practical execution across a wide range of contexts and media. At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme develops your skills as a visual communicator through studio practice, live briefs, and collaborative projects. You will build skills in team-working, communication, project management, and negotiation, working alongside course mates on creative projects in response to subject-specific briefs that mirror the collaborative nature of professional design work. The programme develops your technical proficiency with design tools and processes alongside the critical and conceptual understanding of design history, theory, and culture that allows you to make and justify strong design decisions. The course includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in a studio, agency, or in-house design environment before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points. Graduates from graphic design programmes go on to careers as graphic designers, brand designers, art directors, UX designers, creative directors, typographers, and motion designers in studios, agencies, and in-house teams, as well as in freelance and independent practice. The combination of creative skill and professional experience that this programme provides is particularly valued by employers in the creative industries. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in graphic design, visual communication, and design research.
