BA Global Politics and International Relations
About this course
Global Politics and International Relations is the study of how power operates beyond the borders of individual states, and of the institutions, ideas, and conflicts that shape the world order. The discipline draws on political theory, history, economics, and sociology to examine questions of war and peace, international organisations, human rights, global governance, climate diplomacy, migration, and the rise and fall of great powers. It asks not only what is happening in the world but why, and develops the analytical habits needed to evaluate competing explanations and policy responses. At Birkbeck College in London, this part-time programme provides a strong foundation in international politics while developing the verbal and analytical skills that allow graduates to engage seriously with global affairs, whether in professional or academic contexts. Birkbeck's evening-teaching model is designed for students who work or have other daytime commitments, making this programme particularly accessible to those who want to study without interrupting their careers. You will explore competing theoretical approaches to international relations, from realism and liberalism to constructivism and critical perspectives, and apply them to the evolving dynamics of regions and global institutions. Contemporary challenges, including the climate crisis, security threats, great-power competition, and democratic backsliding, are examined with the rigour that the discipline demands. Graduates of Global Politics and International Relations move into careers in government, foreign affairs, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, journalism, think tanks, and consultancy. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are also valued in business, law, and the wider public sector. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in international relations, security studies, development, or public policy, building specialist expertise for senior professional or research careers. London's position as a centre of diplomacy, finance, and international civil society makes it a particularly fitting place to study the world's most pressing political challenges.
