MA German and Persian and Russian
About this course
German, Persian, and Russian is one of the most linguistically ambitious combinations available in UK higher education, spanning three major language families: Germanic, Iranian, and Slavic. German is the most widely spoken language in the European Union and a cornerstone of European business, science, and culture. Persian (Farsi) is an ancient and living language spoken across Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, with a literary tradition of extraordinary richness and a central position in Middle Eastern and Central Asian culture. Russian is the language of one of the world's largest and most geopolitically significant countries, with a literary tradition that includes some of the most celebrated novels ever written. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme develops you toward high proficiency in German alongside a serious engagement with both Persian and Russian. You will explore the cultural heritage of the German-speaking lands, including literature, history, politics, and film, while developing the linguistic competence to engage with German at an advanced level. Your Persian studies will introduce you to one of the world's great languages in both its classical and modern forms, while your Russian studies will develop the Cyrillic script, grammatical structures, and cultural contexts that make Russian a demanding but rewarding language to learn. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the chance to spend time in immersive contact with one or more of your languages in the communities where they are spoken. The breadth of this combination is itself distinctive: few graduates can operate across three such linguistically and culturally diverse traditions. Graduates are highly sought in diplomacy, intelligence, international organisations, translation, journalism, academia, and any profession requiring engagement with Central Asia, the Middle East, Russia, or German-speaking Europe. Postgraduate study in modern languages or area studies is a natural continuation.
