MA German and Management
About this course
German and management is a combination that places one of Europe's most important languages and cultural traditions alongside the practical study of how organisations function and succeed. Germany is Europe's largest economy and one of the world's leading exporters, and Mandarin aside, German is probably the language most directly associated with manufacturing excellence, engineering innovation, and international commercial strength. For students with an interest in both language and business, this pairing is a strategically well-considered choice. At the University of St Andrews this four-year, full-time MA (Hons) programme develops your German language and communication skills to a high level of proficiency, with the flexibility to follow your own interests across a broad range of courses exploring the rich cultural heritage of the German-speaking world, including literature, history, film, and politics. The management component introduces you to the theory and practice of how organisations operate, covering strategy, finance, marketing, organisational behaviour, and the dynamics of leadership and decision-making. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to live and study in a German-speaking environment and to deepen your fluency and cultural understanding in the most immersive way possible. Graduates with this combination are particularly well placed for careers in international business, consulting, finance, trade, and government where the ability to operate in both English and German-speaking professional contexts is valued. Many move into roles in multinational companies with significant German operations or partnerships, in international management consultancies, or in government and diplomatic roles with a European focus. Others build careers in journalism, publishing, cultural organisations, or educational institutions where German language expertise is directly relevant. Postgraduate study in management, German studies, business administration, or European studies is available for those who want to develop their expertise further.
