About this course

Geology is the science of the Earth itself, examining the rocks, minerals, structures and processes that make up the planet, from the deep interior through the mantle and crust to the surface landscapes we inhabit. Geologists investigate the history of the Earth over billions of years, the processes that build mountains and open oceans, the distribution of natural resources and the hazards, from earthquakes and volcanoes to floods and landslides, that arise from the dynamic planet we live on. In an era defined by climate change, resource scarcity and growing pressure on the natural environment, geological knowledge has never been more practically important. At Royal Holloway this four-year, full-time programme builds a deep understanding of the physical Earth and the dynamic processes that continue to shape it, developing your ability to read the geological record in rocks and landscapes and to apply quantitative and analytical methods to geological problems. You will study the full range of geological disciplines, including mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, sedimentology, palaeontology, geochemistry and geophysics, and you will develop field skills through mapping and observation in the field as well as laboratory competence in analytical techniques. The degree includes a year in industry, which places you in a professional geological, environmental or resource sector organisation before you graduate, and a year abroad, giving you experience of geological environments and academic traditions in another country. Geologists find careers in the energy sector, including oil, gas and the rapidly growing renewable energy industry, mineral exploration and mining, environmental consultancy, hydrogeology and water resources, engineering geology, geotechnical consultancy, hazard assessment, the civil service and academic research. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in geology, geophysics, environmental science or related areas, and some progress into research careers with universities, government agencies or commercial organisations.
