BSc Geography
About this course
Geography is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary subjects you can study, sitting at the boundary between the natural and social sciences and asking how the physical world and human society interact across space and time. It investigates everything from climate systems, glaciers, and rivers to cities, migration, development, and geopolitical conflict. What gives geography its distinctive character is its concern with place, the way that where something happens shapes what it means and how it can be understood. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, geography study takes on particular resonance given the institution's deep roots in the environments, communities, and economies of Scotland's Highlands and Islands. This part-time programme allows you to pursue a rigorous degree in the subject while fitting your studies around existing work and personal commitments. You will engage with the physical processes that shape landscapes and the human processes that transform territories, developing skills in fieldwork, spatial analysis, qualitative research, and written communication. The programme draws on a variety of learning modes, including in-person sessions, digital access to classes and materials, work-based activity for industry experience, and intensive short periods of study, reflecting the distributed character of the institution and the diverse circumstances of its students. Geography graduates develop a distinctive set of capabilities: the ability to think spatially, to analyse data from both physical and social sources, to conduct fieldwork, and to communicate findings clearly in written and visual form. These translate into careers in urban and regional planning, environmental management, conservation, geographic information systems, local government, sustainability consulting, international development, and research. The discipline also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in areas as varied as environmental science, urban planning, human geography, or climate policy.
