About this course

Geography is the discipline that asks how the physical world works and how human beings have shaped and been shaped by it. It spans the scientific study of landscapes, climate, rivers, and ecosystems alongside the social scientific study of cities, economies, migration, development, and inequality. This breadth is both what makes geography demanding and what makes it genuinely useful, because the most important problems of our time, from climate change and environmental degradation to urbanisation and resource scarcity, require exactly this kind of thinking across the physical and the human. At Salford you will build your understanding of the processes that shape the natural environment and of how humans respond to and alter those processes. The programme engages with climate science, geomorphology, hydrology, and ecology alongside human geography covering urbanism, development, sustainability, and the social dimensions of environmental change. You will develop skills in fieldwork, spatial analysis, geographic information systems, and quantitative and qualitative research methods, giving you a genuinely practical toolkit alongside the theoretical understanding that informs it. The programme is offered part-time, making it accessible to students who need flexibility to combine their studies with other commitments. Sustainability and climate change mitigation are central themes throughout, reflecting the urgency of the questions that geography now addresses. Geography graduates go on to careers in environmental consultancy, urban planning, local and central government, conservation, international development, teaching, research, and the private sector. The breadth of skills the degree develops, including data analysis, fieldwork, critical thinking, and written communication, is valued across many professional contexts. Many students continue to postgraduate study in geography, urban planning, environmental management, or a related field.
