About this course
Geography is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary subjects available at university level, concerned with the physical processes that shape the Earth's surface and with the human societies and economic systems that occupy and transform it. It asks both scientific and humanistic questions: how do rivers and glaciers work, how do cities grow, why are some places rich and others poor, how does climate change affect different communities, and what can be done about it? This breadth makes geography an unusually stimulating discipline for students who are curious about the world in all its complexity. The Open University offers geography on a part-time basis through distance learning, making it accessible to students who cannot study full-time or who need to balance their education with work, family, or other commitments. You will explore both physical geography, including geomorphology, hydrology, and climatology, and human geography, including urban geography, development, globalisation, and environmental politics. The Open University's approach to distance learning provides carefully designed study materials, online support, and access to a network of fellow students and academic tutors, enabling serious study without the need to attend campus. The part-time structure means you can progress at a pace that suits your circumstances, while still engaging with material of genuine intellectual depth.
