About this course

Physical geography is concerned with the Earth's natural systems: the processes that sculpt landscapes, drive climate, move water, generate hazards and sustain life on the planet's surface. It encompasses climatology, geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, volcanology and coastal science, asking how the Earth system works and how it is changing. In an era defined by environmental crisis, physical geographers are central to understanding and responding to the challenges of climate change, sea level rise, flooding, drought and the management of natural resources. At the University of Keele this accredited programme takes you from climate systems and glaciers through floods, rising sea levels and volcanoes, developing your understanding of the planet's processes and systems. You will build practical skills through hands-on fieldwork, laboratory classes and work placement opportunities, developing the technical and data analysis capabilities that employers in geography and environmental science value. The programme runs over three years full time and includes a sandwich year in industry and a year abroad, giving you professional and international experience alongside your academic development. Physical geography graduates work in environmental consultancy, the public sector, conservation and land management, climate science, water management, planning, geotechnical investigation and research. Roles include environmental scientist, flood risk analyst, GIS specialist, planning officer, climate analyst and cartographer. The fieldwork skills and quantitative methods the degree develops are particularly valued by employers who need graduates ready to work with environmental data in complex real-world settings. Postgraduate study in physical geography, environmental management, climate science or GIS is a natural further route.
