MA Geography and Scottish History
About this course
Geography and Scottish history form a pairing that rewards sustained study, bringing together the discipline that examines how people and environments interact across space with the historical tradition that traces how Scotland's distinctive political, cultural and social identity has developed over centuries. Together they encourage a kind of thinking that is simultaneously attentive to place and to time, asking how geography has shaped history and how historical processes have transformed landscapes, communities and environments. At the University of St Andrews this four-year programme combines geography's engagement with both physical and human systems, including climate, geomorphology, urban and rural development, and political geography, with Scottish history's focus on the long sweep of Scotland's past, from the medieval period through the Reformation, the Union, the Enlightenment and the industrial era to contemporary devolved Scotland. A year abroad embedded in the four-year structure gives you the opportunity to engage with geography and history in a different national context, which is particularly valuable for developing a comparative perspective on Scotland's own trajectory. You will develop strong research skills in both disciplines, including fieldwork and archival investigation. Graduates of this combination pursue careers in education, heritage, museums and archives, cultural policy, environmental consultancy and planning, tourism, journalism and the civil service. Teaching in Scottish schools is a common destination for those who want to continue engaging with both subjects professionally, and the research skills developed across the programme are valued in any role that requires careful engagement with complex evidence. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geography, history, Scottish studies, environmental management or heritage, using the breadth of their undergraduate formation as a foundation for specialist work.
