About this course

Geography and Hebrew is an unusual but intellectually rich pairing that brings together the study of the physical and human world in all its spatial complexity with access to one of the most historically significant languages in existence. Geography challenges you to think critically and creatively about the world, examining the interaction of environmental systems and human activity, from climate change and urbanisation to political geography and development. Hebrew opens access to a language with a three-thousand-year written history, the language of the Hebrew Bible and of the modern State of Israel, and a vehicle for engaging with one of the most debated and important regions in contemporary international affairs. At the University of St Andrews you will study geography and Hebrew over four years of full-time study, with a year abroad built into the programme to broaden your academic and cultural perspective in both disciplines. The geography component develops your analytical, fieldwork and quantitative skills across physical and human geography, examining environmental change, social geography, geopolitics and the methods geographers use to understand the world. The Hebrew component develops language proficiency alongside cultural, literary and historical understanding of the Hebrew-speaking world across ancient, medieval and modern periods. The typical tariff of 232 reflects the combined intellectual demands of a dual programme at one of the UK's most selective universities. Graduates work in international relations, journalism, academia, diplomacy, the civil service, development organisations, religious and cultural institutions, environmental consultancy, and a wide range of professional roles where either geographical awareness or Hebrew language competency is directly relevant. The combination of geographic analytical skills and Hebrew proficiency is particularly distinctive for careers focused on the Middle East, Israel, Jewish studies, or the intersection of environmental and geopolitical questions in that region. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geography, Hebrew, Middle East studies, international relations or related fields.
