MA Geography and German (4yrs)
About this course
Geography and German is a combination that gives you both a sophisticated understanding of physical and human space in all its complexity and a genuine linguistic and cultural competence in one of Europe's most important languages. Geography is exceptionally broad, spanning the physical processes that shape landscapes and climates alongside the human systems, from cities and economies to migration and development, that have transformed the planet. German opens access to a great intellectual and literary tradition, as well as to the political and economic culture of one of Europe's most significant nations. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time degree develops your geographical knowledge and skills alongside your German language competence. In geography you will cover both physical and human geography, developing quantitative and qualitative research skills, fieldwork experience and the ability to analyse spatial data and present geographical arguments. In German you will build your language proficiency toward an advanced level, engaging with literature, history, culture and contemporary German-speaking society. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the chance to study at a partner institution in a German-speaking country and to develop your language fluency in a real cultural and educational environment. Typical entry is around 184 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from geography and German combinations are well positioned for careers in international business, environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, development organisations, the civil service and diplomatic service, journalism, research, education and the many other sectors where a combination of spatial awareness and European language expertise is valuable. Further study in geography, environmental management, German studies, European affairs or international relations is a natural next step for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic research.
