About this course
Games development sits at the intersection of software engineering, interactive design, visual art and storytelling. It is one of the most technically demanding and creatively rich areas of the technology industry, requiring people who can write performant code, design compelling systems, create or direct visual content, and think carefully about how players experience and engage with what they make. The games industry is now one of the largest entertainment sectors in the world, generating more revenue than film and music combined, and it continues to grow. At the University of Chester this three-year full-time programme develops your skills across the core disciplines of games development, including programming, engine use, game design, asset creation and project management. You will work on games projects throughout the degree, developing both individual and team-based skills. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you a full year of professional experience in the industry, as well as a year abroad and built-in work placement activity. These opportunities mean you graduate not just with a portfolio of games work but with documented professional experience and a network of industry contacts, both of which are significant advantages in a competitive field. Graduates from games development programmes go on to work as programmers, gameplay designers, level designers, technical artists, producers and quality assurance engineers in games studios of all sizes. Others move into adjacent fields such as virtual reality and augmented reality development, interactive media, simulation software or film and television visual effects. Some start their own independent studios. The skills developed in games development, including real-time programming, interactive system design and collaborative production under tight constraints, are increasingly valued outside the games industry in areas such as training simulation, architectural visualisation and interactive education. Postgraduate study in games technology, computer science or creative technologies is also a pathway available to graduates.
