BA Games Art and Design
About this course
Games art and design is the discipline concerned with the visual and aesthetic dimension of video games: the concept art, character design, environments, animations, user interface, and overall visual identity that make a game world feel believable, distinctive, and compelling. It sits at the intersection of traditional visual art practice and the technical skills needed to realise artistic vision within the constraints of real-time interactive media. Games artists must understand both the creative and the production dimensions of their work, including how assets are built, optimised, and integrated into game engines. This four-year full-time programme at Norwich University of the Arts approaches games art through the lens of a specialist arts institution, emphasising creative and critical thinking alongside technical skill. You will develop abilities in concept art, 3D modelling and sculpting, texturing, rigging, animation, environment design, and visual development, working with industry-standard software throughout. The programme also develops your understanding of game design principles, narrative, and the visual language of different genres and platforms. Norwich's creative culture encourages experimentation and the development of a distinctive visual voice, which is increasingly important as the games industry grows more diverse and players seek more varied aesthetic experiences. Graduates from this programme pursue careers as games artists in studios of all sizes, from small independent developers to major publishers. Roles include concept artist, 3D character artist, environment artist, technical artist, and UI/UX designer. Many graduates also work as freelance artists, and some develop independent games projects alongside client work. The skills in digital art and 3D production are also valued in film and animation, virtual reality, architectural visualisation, and other creative industries that use similar workflows. Postgraduate study in games design, animation, or digital arts is available for those who want to deepen their practice.
