BA Game Art
About this course
Game art is the visual and creative foundation on which games are built. Every character, environment, vehicle, prop, and interface element in a game has been designed and produced by game artists working across a range of specialisms, from concept development and 2D illustration to 3D modelling, sculpting, texturing, and level design. The discipline demands both technical facility with the tools of game production and the imaginative and aesthetic judgment to use those tools compellingly. At Wrexham University, this part-time programme is designed for those who want to pursue careers in game art and the broader design industries. You will explore all key aspects of game art production, moving from 2D concept development through to 3D modelling, sculpting, level design, and mixed screen-based media. The course builds your imagination and technical skills in parallel, reflecting the reality that professional game artists must be both visually creative and highly disciplined in their working methods. A foundation year is available for those who need to build their skills and technical understanding before entering the main degree. The programme includes a placement year, giving you direct experience in a professional game art or design environment, alongside additional work placement support. Personal and professional development, communication, and entrepreneurial skills are developed throughout, preparing you for a diverse and fast-moving industry. Graduates of game art programmes work in games studios in roles including character artist, environment artist, concept artist, level designer, and technical artist. The skills developed are also applicable in animation, film visual effects, virtual reality, augmented reality, and product design. Many graduates freelance, building client-facing careers that cross multiple creative industries. Postgraduate study in game design, animation, or digital arts is a natural progression for those who want to develop their practice further.
