MA French/Theatre Studies
About this course
French and theatre studies is a pairing that brings together the richness of French language and culture with the critical and practical study of performance. French is one of the world's most important languages, carrying access to an extraordinary literary and intellectual tradition as well as to the political and cultural life of France, Belgium, Switzerland and the many francophone communities across Africa, the Caribbean and beyond. Theatre studies examines dramatic forms and performance traditions across cultures and periods, developing both the analytical vocabulary needed to discuss theatre critically and an understanding of how performance works as a cultural and artistic practice. At the University of Glasgow this programme runs over five years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure and the inclusion of a sandwich year and work-placement experience. You will have the opportunity to focus on a wide range of topics within French, including French comics, French song, travel writing, medieval France and contemporary French history, as well as engaging deeply with theatre studies through dramatic analysis and performance theory. Work-placement experience in the arts or related sector gives you the opportunity to apply your skills and interests in a professional environment during your studies. You will develop advanced French language proficiency alongside skills in dramatic analysis, literary criticism, extended academic writing and research. The combination of language fluency, cultural knowledge and critical thinking is highly transferable across many professional and academic fields. Graduates from French and theatre studies programmes pursue careers in arts administration, cultural programming, journalism, translation, education, publishing, the civil service and international organisations. The language skills and cultural competence developed in this degree are particularly valuable in any career with a European or francophone international dimension. Postgraduate study in French, theatre studies, translation or a related field is also a natural route for those seeking specialist expertise.
