About this course

French and Spanish together give you access to two of the world's most widely spoken and culturally influential languages. French is the first language of more than 100 million people across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond, and is an official language of many of the world's most important international organisations. Spanish is spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe and Latin America, and its commercial and cultural reach continues to grow. Studying both to a high level of proficiency creates a linguistic and cultural profile that is genuinely distinctive. At the University of Stirling, this four-year, full-time programme develops your competence in both languages across all four skills, engaging you with the literature, culture, history, and contemporary life of the French and Spanish-speaking worlds in their diversity. You will move between two linguistic and cultural traditions, building comparative understanding and developing the kind of cultural sensitivity and analytical depth that comes from sustained engagement with more than one language. A year abroad is included, giving you the opportunity to live and study in a French or Spanish-speaking country, deepening your fluency through direct immersion and experience. Graduates of French and Spanish joint degrees are well-placed for careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, the foreign service, journalism, international organisations, education, the cultural sector, and tourism. The combination of two major European and international languages is recognised by employers across many sectors, and graduates frequently find that their linguistic range gives them access to career opportunities that single-language graduates cannot access. Many also continue to postgraduate study in languages, translation, international relations, or education.
