MA French and Italian and Russian
About this course
French, Italian, and Russian together make an exceptional linguistic portfolio, giving you access to three major European literary and cultural traditions and to three very different but equally rich languages. French is the language of the Enlightenment, of modern philosophy, of West African literature, and of one of the world's most significant diplomatic and commercial communities. Italian opens the door to one of the world's great artistic and literary heritages, from Dante and the Renaissance through to contemporary Italian literature and film. Russian is the language of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and a major Slavic tradition, as well as a key language in geopolitics and international affairs. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops your language and communications skills in French to a high level of proficiency through the study of French and Francophone language, literature, and culture, with parallel development in Italian and Russian. You will study literature, cultural history, politics, and linguistics across all three languages, building a remarkable range of linguistic and cultural knowledge. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity for extended immersion in one or more of the language communities you are studying. Entry typically requires around 232 UCAS tariff points. Graduates with three European languages at this level are exceptionally well placed for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, translation and interpreting, cultural institutions, journalism, education, international business, and academic research. The rarity of this combination is a significant professional advantage in any context where cross-European or international communication is required.
