BA French and History
About this course
French and History is a combination that rewards study together, because so much of what happened in Europe and beyond over the past four centuries has been shaped by France, and because understanding French history and culture enriches your language study in ways that purely linguistic training cannot achieve. Whether you are engaging with the Revolution and its legacy, the history of French colonialism and decolonisation, the Occupation and Resistance, or the political culture of the Fifth Republic, the historical dimension gives your French studies texture and depth. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme develops French language skills to a high level alongside a serious engagement with history. French is one of the world's major international languages, spoken as a first language by more than 100 million people and widely used as a second language across Africa, Canada, and international institutions including the United Nations and the European Union. Strathclyde's strong research culture in both French studies and history ensures that the teaching is grounded in current scholarly understanding, and the programme takes both disciplines seriously as intellectual endeavours in their own right. Graduates of French and History programmes are well placed for careers in the civil service and diplomatic service, law, journalism, publishing, education, international business and European institutions, the cultural sector, and research. The combination of linguistic fluency and historical understanding gives you a distinctive perspective on European affairs and a broad base of analytical and communication skills that employers across many sectors value. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in French studies, history, European politics, or international relations, and some develop academic careers.
