MA French and Business
About this course
French and Business is a pairing that reflects a practical reality: language skills and commercial understanding are most powerful when they work together. French is a major world language spoken across Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, and parts of the Americas, and it serves as a working language for numerous international organisations. Combined with business knowledge, French competence opens access to opportunities that neither subject could provide alone. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme develops your French language skills to a high level alongside a grounding in the core principles of business management. On the language side, you will study French through reading, writing, listening, and speaking, engaging with literature, culture, media, and contemporary affairs to build genuine proficiency. The business strand covers the major areas of commercial life, including marketing, finance, strategy, organisational behaviour, and the international business environment. The four-year structure, common in Scottish universities, allows both elements to develop fully without either being superficial. You will also engage with the cultural dimensions of the French-speaking world, developing an understanding of business practice and social norms that textbook knowledge alone cannot provide. Graduates of this combination are well placed for international careers across a wide range of sectors. Roles in international business, trade, diplomacy, European and international organisations, consultancy, finance, marketing, and translation are all natural destinations. The French-speaking world represents a major economic zone, and professionals who can navigate it with cultural confidence and linguistic fluency are consistently sought after. Postgraduate study in international business, European studies, translation and interpreting, or an MBA is a common route for those who wish to develop their expertise or move into more senior roles.
