BSc Food Science and Technology
About this course
Food science and technology is the discipline concerned with understanding how food is produced, processed, preserved, and made safe for consumption. It brings together biology, chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and nutrition to address some of the most practical and consequential challenges facing modern societies: how to feed a growing global population safely and sustainably, how to reduce food waste, how to develop new food products that meet consumer demand while maintaining nutritional quality, and how to ensure that the food supply is free from contamination and fraud. It is a field with direct relevance to public health, environmental sustainability, and economic productivity. At Teesside this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the scientific principles that underpin food technology alongside the practical and industrial knowledge needed to work effectively in the food sector. You will study food chemistry, microbiology, processing and preservation techniques, quality assurance, food safety regulation, and the development of new food products. The food industry is one of the UK's largest manufacturing sectors, and the programme is designed with direct industry relevance, preparing graduates to contribute from the first day of employment. A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you extended professional experience in a food industry setting before you complete your degree. Work placement experience is embedded throughout, ensuring you graduate with practical competence and professional context alongside your scientific knowledge. Graduates move into roles in food manufacturing, product development, quality assurance, food safety and regulation, retail buying, and nutrition. The food and drink sector offers consistent graduate demand, and the technical grounding of the degree opens doors in associated areas including biotechnology, packaging, and supply chain management. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in food science or nutrition.
