BA Fine Art with Integrated Foundation Year
About this course
Fine art is the practice and study of creative work made primarily for its aesthetic, conceptual, or expressive qualities rather than for purely functional ends. It encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, installation, performance, video, and digital practices, and it challenges students to develop their own artistic voice, to think critically about what art is and what it does, and to situate their practice within the history and theory of contemporary visual culture. A fine art degree is not a technical training in narrow craft skills; it is an education in creative thinking, visual intelligence, and the sustained, independent development of ideas. At the University of Sunderland, the BA in Fine Art with Integrated Foundation Year is a four-year full-time programme that begins with a supported foundation year, designed to give students a broad creative education and a smooth entry into degree-level study. The foundation year is particularly well suited to students who are returning to education, who did not quite meet direct entry requirements, or who simply want additional time to explore their creative interests before committing to a specialism. From the foundation year you will progress into the degree, working in Sunderland's specialist studio facilities and developing your practice across a range of media. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and develop a global perspective on contemporary art practice. Graduates from fine art programmes go on to careers as practising artists, illustrators, designers, educators, arts administrators, curators, and art therapists, as well as in a range of roles in the creative industries. The degree is also a strong foundation for postgraduate study in fine art, visual arts practice, or related creative disciplines.
