BSc Financial Economics
About this course
Financial economics is a degree that sits at the intersection of economic theory and financial practice, applying the analytical tools of economics to the study of financial markets, institutions, and policy. Where pure finance focuses on the techniques of investment and valuation, and where economics examines how markets and institutions function in theory and in aggregate, financial economics combines both: using economic reasoning to understand why financial markets behave as they do, how risk is priced, how monetary and fiscal policy affects financial conditions, and how financial systems can fail. At Coventry University, this three-year full-time programme blends real-world economics, financial insight, and practical skills for the finance and economics professionals of tomorrow. A sandwich year is built into the degree, giving you the opportunity to work in a finance or economics role before your final year. A year abroad at a partner institution is also incorporated, and work placement is additionally available, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic training. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, financial markets, corporate finance, monetary economics, and investment analysis, developing both the theoretical rigour and the applied capabilities that careers in finance and economics demand. You will develop strong quantitative skills in statistical and econometric analysis alongside the financial understanding needed to interpret markets and evaluate policy. The combination makes you versatile across the range of roles where economics and finance intersect. Graduates go on to work in investment banking, asset management, economic consultancy, financial analysis, central banking, government economic departments, and corporate finance. The blend of economic reasoning and financial expertise is particularly valued in the most analytically demanding roles across the financial sector. Professional qualifications in finance or economics, and postgraduate study in financial economics or a related field, are common next steps.
