Film as a practice-based degree is concerned with how films are made: the creative decisions about cinematography, direction, editing, sound and production design that transform an idea into a finished work. It is different from film studies in that its primary orientation is practical, though rigorous analysis of film as an art form and an industry remains central. You learn by making, by watching, and by thinking carefully about the relationship between the two. At the University of Brighton, the three-year full-time degree develops your skills across the key craft areas of filmmaking: camera operation, sound design, editing, directing and producing. You will work on productions throughout the course, building a practical portfolio and developing the collaborative working habits that professional filmmaking requires. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, which gives you the opportunity to spend time working in the film or television industry before you graduate.
