BA Film, TV and Games Music with Foundation Year
About this course
Music for film, television, and games is one of the most technically specialised and creatively demanding areas of professional composition. The composer's task is to understand the emotional and narrative intentions of a director or developer, translate those intentions into musical terms, and deliver music that enhances, shapes, or transforms the audience's experience of the moving image or interactive environment. The craft involves understanding how music and sound function psychologically and dramatically, mastering the technical tools of scoring and production, and developing the professional skills to work effectively within creative teams. This four-year full-time degree at Leeds Conservatoire includes a foundation year, giving you the opportunity to build compositional and technical foundations before entering the main programme. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of composing for film and television in your early studies, exploring different approaches to scoring and how music interacts with visual media. Group seminars give you the opportunity to discuss your work, share ideas with peers, and engage critically with how music shapes narrative and emotion in moving images and interactive contexts. As the programme progresses, you will develop your compositional voice alongside the technical production skills needed to work professionally in the industry. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points reflects an accessible admissions standard for a vocationally focused creative programme. Graduates from film, television, and games music programmes move into careers as composers for screen and interactive media, music supervisors, sound designers, orchestrators and arrangers, music editors, and in teaching and music education. Many build portfolio careers combining compositional work with other musical and professional activities.
