MA Film & Television Studies/History of Art
About this course
Film and television studies combined with history of art is a degree that examines how images work and what they mean, across two of the most significant visual media of the modern era and across the longer history of art-making from which cinema and television emerged. Film and television studies develops your ability to analyse moving images critically, to understand the histories and theories of these media, and to situate screen culture within its social, political, and industrial contexts. History of art develops your visual literacy across a much longer timeframe, examining paintings, sculpture, architecture, and other art forms as objects that carry meaning, reflect their historical moment, and shape how their cultures understand themselves. The University of Glasgow offers this combined degree on a part-time basis, with a year abroad option, suited to students who need flexibility alongside their studies. Glasgow's film and television studies lecturers are leading researchers in the field, as the course notes, bringing specialist expertise into their teaching alongside strong connections to Glasgow's creative and cultural organisations, including policymakers and screen practitioners who contribute to the programme. You will develop close analytical skills in both film and art history, learning to read visual works with precision and situate them within wider contexts of culture, politics, and production history. Graduates work in the cultural sector, in museums and galleries, film and television development, arts journalism, cultural policy, heritage, archiving, education, and the creative industries. The analytical and communication skills developed through the combination are valued across many professional contexts, and Glasgow's strong creative sector connections provide valuable professional networks. Postgraduate study in film, art history, media studies, or curating is a natural direction for those wanting to develop deeper expertise.
